About Ayo Heinegg Magwood

Ayo Heinegg Magwood is a professional genealogist and historical researcher specializing in enslaved African Americans and Free People of Color (FPOC). Tracing enslaved individuals across generations requires a highly specialized skill set due to severe archival gaps. Building on training from her father, renowned genealogist Paul Heinegg, and two decades as an economic research analyst, Ayo developed original, field-tested methodologies for shattering the “1870 brick wall”. Their effectiveness is demonstrated in her forthcoming journal article in The Genealogist which traces her enslaved African American lineage back to the mid-1600s.

Ayo grounds her analysis of complex 18th- and 19th-century probate, court, tax, land, enslavement, and archival records in deep African American historical context, essential for interpreting these genealogies. She speaks at genealogy conferences and has presented a Legacy Family Tree Webinar. Ayo offers on-site research access to the National Archives (NARA) and the DAR Library.
